Maths

At Queen’s Park Academy, we view Mathematics as a tool for everyday life; a network of numerical skills, concepts and relationships which provide a way of viewing and making sense of the world. All staff recognise that it is their responsibility to design and deliver a high-quality Mathematics education that builds confident, competent, resilient and curious mathematicians who are equipped for understanding the world around them. We foster young minds to be able to confidently tackle a range of practical tasks and real-life problems through making connections between concepts and reasoning mathematically.

When planning Mathematics lessons, we break down learning into granular steps to map a journey towards the end goal without overloading student working memory in the process. This allows us to:

-Model clearly and give children a chance to practice at every step.

-Chose a concrete or pictorial representation which serves our intended learning outcome.  Rather than introducing all of the possible representations.

-Ensure that each lesson contains a manageable step of progress for the children from where they are towards the intended goal.

-Prevent children experiencing cognitive overload.

-Allows those who find maths harder to be able to progress.

We follow the White Rose Maths Hub scheme of learning.

Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

Having a secure grasp of the basics of maths, including the fluent recall of times tables, is crucial for children’s success in moving on to more complex maths.

The multiplication tables check is an online, on-screen assessment given to pupils in year 4. It checks their ability to fluently recall times tables up to 12×12. It’s made up of 25 times tables questions. Your child will be able to answer 3 practice questions before taking the actual check. They will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.

Help your child at home by practicing their tables with them, make up songs to help remember them or encourage them to use TT Rockstars as an online tool to improve their fluency.
